From
our Arieana Notebook: Rissla has been described as one
of the
best mares ever bred at Crabbet. Inheriting the remarkably brilliant action
of her sire *Berk and numerous
qualities from her dam Risala, Rissla
certainly was a wonderful
broodmare and became famous throughout the world for the exceptional
qualities she herself possessed and passed on to her descendants. A golden chestnut
with a blaze and four white legs, Rissla was a most
beautiful type of mare with a splendid front and good deep body.
Her outstanding attributes were her lovely head, great quality
and perfect style and action, and these were very largely
inherited by her foals and their foals, thus establishing a
dynasty of her own and ensuring her sire *Berk's
international reputation as a breeding horse. For us at Arieana
Arabians we find Rissla's superb qualities coming down to us mid-pedigree
through her daughters Risslina
and *Rifala.
In 1945 at the age of twenty-eight Rissla was put down,
but the memory of this wonderful chestnut mare with her beauty
and true floating action will live on through her descendants in
countries all over the world.
Source: Notes on Rissla are
derived from an article by Rosemary Archer which first appeared in the Spring 1972 issue of Great Britain's Arab
Horse Society News and then was reprinted in the Arabian Horse
World, May 1975, with the kind permission of its editor,
Margaret Greely. We thank Windwalker
for sharing this article with us.
